Well...the first thing you are probably thinking by the way this thread is titled is "wow...he doesn't like Brawl?!"
At the time I am writing this (exactly 9:50 PM EST), I STILL haven't played Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Do I have it you ask? Yes, I have it alright but here's how my day went down...
I left the house this morning at 9:30AM on the dot to be at Blockbuster before they opened at 10AM. I arrived there at 9:45AM...giving me 15 minutes to make sure I was ahead the line that waited patiently at the locked door. Well, to my surprise there was no line...or even a car in the Blockbuster parking lot for that matter. I asked myself, "what the heck is going on?" After all the hype, anticipation, and excitement for Super Smash Bros. Brawl, there wasn't anyone around...it was like a ghost town in the Blockbuster parking lot.
Finally, the employee opened the door (at 10:02AM) and I went directly to the front counter to claim my long-awaited prize. The manager on duty, walking around up and down the aisles to make sure everything was in place for the day was talking to herself about how the printers weren't working in the store, and this and that, etc. I didn't care...at all about any of that. It wasn't my problem. All I knew was I was there for one reason and one reason only...to claim my prize!
As she made her way back up front, she asked me if I needed any help with anything. I felt like saying..."DUH, I came to get my copy of Super Smash Bros. Brawl." There were 5-6 copies of this gem laying behind the counter. Obviously they had already laid the pre-ordered copies out for the game-hungry players to come in and get their copy.
Anyway, she rang me up, put it in a bag and I quickly dashed out and went back home. After getting back home, I had a few things to do around the house before I inserted the finger-print-less disk of addiction into the towering console. Hour after hour went by as I cleaned and picked up. Between breaks, I would play a few Guitar Hero III songs to break up the monotonous of the cleaning.
At precisely 3:15PM, I finally got the chance to feed the shiny disk into the console to begin my epic, long-awaited adventure. I ejected the Guitar Hero III disk and inserted the SSBB disk only to get something I was not at all expecting...A DISK READ ERROR!!! NO WAY!! This cannot be happening. I did everything right and now this!?!? I pre-ordered the game, showed up early, and even cleaned up nice to fetch my treasure and I get this...A DISK READ ERROR!!!
I immediately called Blockbuster and asked to get a replacement because mine didn't work. The trembling voice on the other side of the phone said "I am sorry Sir, we have already sold the titles we had!" Frantically, I asked her to call the other store to see if they had any left. She called and told me the unfortunate news...they are also out! Feeling the desperation come over me I told her that I needed a copy now to basically find a copy for me because this one was defective. She told me the only thing she could do is give me another copy once they got some more in next weekend. Well, I couldn't wait that long...I wasn't going to wait that long!!! Knowing that I wasn't going to get anywhere and that nothing she could do would be able to help me...I politely told her thanks and hung up.
The first thing that came to mind now was that I was going to get a copy some how, some where. I picked up the phone and called Target and asked to be transferred to electronics. "Hello, this is Kelly, how can I help you?", she asked. I asked her if they had Brawl and she said yes. For self-re-assurance I asked her if she was sure it was Brawl and not Melee for the GameCube. She said it was Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Wii and she said she had plenty of them. I asked her to hold a copy of it and she did.
I sped off to Target to get my game. I wasn't in the store for more than 5 minutes total. I sped back home as if I was in one the Fan Fictions written by Powerfullove and pulled into my driveway with a smile on my face. I walked in cracked the game case and zipped the disk in the console only to get another DISK READ ERROR!!! OK...this cannot be happening to me...NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
I suddenly had an epiphany and realized that "hey, for some reason I might need to update my Wii software. I connected online, ran an update, shut the console down completely then restarted it. I popped the disk back in...it made a ever so subtle beep this time and that's when I knew it would work. I waited for a moment and the Brawl screen appeared on the TV screen.
WOW, what a nightmare huh? Why the heck didn't my console say "hey, you need an update to run this disk" when I inserted the disk in the first place? What a drag!!
Now, I have two copies of Super Smash Bros. Brawl and I am stuck with both of them. Unfortunately, un-opened software cannot be returned for a refund and I knew that...but I wanted Brawl...and I was going to get it no matter what the cost...about $100 bucks.
Well, it's now 10:30PM and I still haven't played. I will probably play in a little while after I post a few replies and read everyone's feedback on Brawl.
Lesson learned...DO YOUR WII UPDATES!!!
