Did you know that it is possible to get too many free men? By getting too many free men and then dying once, it's ends the game.

Close. It's actually on the 129th life that the glitch occurs. The game designers didn't think a player would ever get more than 100 lives or so. On the 129th life, the game interprets that as a negative number (due to limited bit string information...kind of like a data overflow or overrun), ending the game upon death.
I personally have never confirmed this but once you get 255 lives the game resets back to positive numbers. I don't see how its possible to get that many lives given the limited time to complete the level but it's interesting information.

I was actually talking about not using any cheats however it would be pretty cool to test the theory to confirm this. Wow, also wouldn't it be hard to keep track of getting over 255 lives...lol?

well it would be a very minscule % that you can live to get a lot of men, then continue on to world 7-1 which is the next place it's possible then you have to avoid dying at all costs. It might be easier to find a rom of Super Mario 2 in japan (lost levels) you can do the trick in world 1-1, continue on to world 3-1, then warp back to 1-1

I knew about the world 7-1 with the beetle at the end on the stairs but I never thought about trying it with last levels and don't even know if the dynamics of this would change.

Yes, it is looking like it might go up in flames...lol I guess it's just an interesting topic because of the curiosity factor of the whole thing.

yea. It just be so hard in smb1, and yes I'd agree with the 255 lives. You can hold only 255 rupees in Zelda, only hold 2562 coins/exp in Dragon Warrior

You can hold only 255 rupees in Zelda, only hold 256 2 coins/exp in Dragon Warrior It's the whole hexcoding issue 255 can be represented by a byte of data is why it's a logic cutoff point is why it's very common in the older games.
